Sometimes Doing the Things We Dislike Most, Are the Things We Need the Most

No matter how generally motivated you are, all of us have some tasks that we don’t want to do.

Maybe we find them boring, pointless, draining, time consuming, annoying, or anxiety producing. Yet, sometimes the things that we try to avoid the most are the most beneficial for us!

For example, how many times do we don’t like going to the gym, especially at 5am on a cold, dark, rainy morning. But when we are done we feel like a million bucks, ready to tackle the day.

Or the same is true while working on a big project. When it’s completed there is such a feeling of accomplishment. A growing trend I notice is people touting, “do only what you love” or “do only what makes your heart soar”. And subsequently, I see people choosing short term pleasures, avoiding hard work and half-assing responsibilities rather than really pushing themselves to make a difference in their career, their health, their life, the world, (and then complaining because they are left behind).

While you should never try to put a square peg in a round hole and force yourself to live a life you were not meant to live, understand that creating the life you were meant to live means sometimes doing things that you don’t always enjoy!

You gotta do stuff you don’t enjoy –

To excel in your career sometimes you will have to accomplish tasks that are not fun. To succeed in fitness you will have to show up several times a week and do some challenging physical exercise and skip the poor quality fattening food throughout the day that you would love to eat.

To raise great kids you have to make decisions that aren’t always well received.

Simply, sometimes you gotta do stuff that you don’t enjoy to create a healthy, happy life that you love. No one who has found true success has only ever done what they love to do, and ignore everything else (ie the hard things!)

The good news is every time we do something that we don’t want to do, we become stronger and really grow from it. Even though we may not realise it at the time, our greatest successes can come from our greatest discomforts.

Once you get it that short term pleasures often stall long term success all you need to do is buckle down, do what you have got to do and get excited about the pride of accomplishment and life success that only hard work can bring.

Taking on tasks we dread not only builds character and resilience but opens up new opportunities for growth and learning.

These uncomfortable tasks often push us to develop new skills and discover hidden talents that we might not have known we possessed. It’s through these challenging experiences that we develop a greater capacity to handle adversity and unexpected obstacles. Each time we push through a difficult task, we expand our comfort zones and become more capable of tackling even more significant challenges in the future.

For instance, tackling a complex project at work may reveal our ability to lead and manage, or consistently pushing ourselves in the gym might uncover a passion for fitness that transforms our lifestyle. Each time we confront a task we dread, we prove to ourselves that we are capable of more than we imagined, fostering a sense of self-efficacy and confidence. This resilience and expanded skill set not only enhance our personal and professional lives but also equip us to inspire and lead others, creating a ripple effect of positivity and growth in our communities.

Once you get that short-term pleasures often stall long-term success, all you need to do is buckle down, do what you have got to do, and get excited about the pride of accomplishment and life success that only hard work can bring.

Embrace the process –

Embrace the process, knowing that every step, no matter how unpleasant, is a crucial part of the journey towards achieving your dreams.

By consistently doing what needs to be done, even when it’s hard, you pave the way for a fulfilling, successful life that is truly worth living.
